The Samoa Swimming Federation was busy over the school break. JICA Volunteer and Development Officer, Koharu Honda, spent a busy two weeks in Lalomalava, Savai’i, running a grassroots swim programme. Savai’ian Hotel sponsored her time in Savai'i while she conducted lessons at the Savai'ian Hotel pool, Amoa Hotel pool and two village fresh-water pools in Lalomalava, Savai’i. “There is a growing interest in learning how to swim in Savai'i and it was great to be able to travel over and spend time developing skill sets”, said Koharu. She was able to connect with over a dozen families and children through the lessons and hopes to expand the programme next time to include area primary schools and high schools. Vaiola College has expressed serious interest in a school swim programme which will be a priority next time the Samoa Swimming Federation travels to the big island.
